Making your own earrings is a satisfying way to explore color and shape. Start with a simple charm design and a few basic tools.

Meet your tools
Two pairs of small flat-nose or chain-nose pliers help you hold and open jump rings.
- Use round-nose pliers later if you want to shape wire loops for beaded designs.
- Work over a tray so small pieces stay together.
Choose your first pieces
For a simple pair, set aside two matching charms, two earring hooks, and compatible jump rings.
- Lay the pieces out before assembling them.
- Check that the colors and proportions work together.
Connect and finish
Grip a jump ring on either side of its opening and twist the ends sideways.
- Add the charm and hook, then twist the ring closed until the ends meet.
- Check each connection and smooth any rough edges before wearing your earrings.
